More often than not, when you find an inexpensive classic with the keywords “custom” in the description, the resulting object looks like Amber Heard’s face after the reviews of Mortdecai hit news stands. This next “custom,” however, bucks those trends and looks surprisingly together for a...well...Frankenstein. Find this

offered for $12,000 in San Diego, CA.
Tip from Rob.
That isn’t just a case of weekend in the garage with a set of tools and some Pep Boys bolt on parts — this car is seriously worked over. The original Z roof is long gone and it uses a Mazda Miata (you probably recognized it) windscreen, but the rest is totally custom.
The seller is skimpy on details, but it appears to be powered by one of the later 280Z 2.8 liter inline-6s attached to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The two best things about this build is that
1
— it isn’t a Fauxrarri, but instead the customizer made his own thing, and
2
— it isn’t powered by an iron block 350 mated to a slushbox. If the paint and body look as good in person as they do in these photos, I give this thing three thumbs up.
See another customized car that isn’t a disaster? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! *In all seriousness, there is nothing funny about domestic violence, and if Depp has been slapping around his wife, one can only hope he spends some time in a prison where a big mean guy named Brutus will crush his gilbert grapes.

for a second i thought it used the s2000 frame just by looking at it
it sucks that you cant put the top “up”
(if i were doing this i’d just throw the 240z panels on the s2000 and call it a day lol)

It’s kind of like a Z8 mated with an Iroc-Z, then left the child with Uncle Datsun Z, with a strict promise to never tell him who his parents were.

Wow, what a find. I’m a diehard 240z fan so this is a bit hard to take but the whole thing is well executed.

I...I really like this. Seems well done and, as you said, isn’t a custom that was made to look like something it obviously isn’t. I actually think I like this too much. Need to leave the CL ad immediately before something awesomely bad happens to my bank account.

Yeah, this is so much better than those fake Ferrari 365 GTB Daytonas that you can find around.

Yes...that is disturbing...but appropriate. The proportions of BMW’s Zed-Eight, but the fit/finish of a Cam
e
ro....and it drives like a Z without a roof.

I love original clean Zs more than the 350V8-slushbox on hideous wheels customs that appear constantly on craigslist/eBay...but this thing isn’t hideous and still has a clutch pedal.

Not sure about the windshield, but a lot of this was from an aftermarket/factory authorized company. looks like some additional bodywork on top of that.

It just looks like it has bits and parts taken from all kinds of different vehicles but in a way that just works. Almost like the guy picked out the aspects of various cars he likes and instead of piecing together parts that don’t work, he had them fashioned to work.
You’ve really got me with this one.

You think this is not a one-off? What company built it?

The front makes me think of Aston Martin circa 1980 for some reason. I like.

its really hard to find reference, but I can show you a few cars with similar head/taillights:
http://datsun.offerclassiccars.com/datsun-zseries…
http://downtownmotorcarsales.com/datsun/111033-…
Its wierd, these all seem to be green, this one is different but the company WAS authorized by datsun/nissan
http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/3…
then again according to wikipedia there is a ton of kit makers.

This is my dad’s car. This car is set up for SCCA Solo Autocross and hill climbs. Every part has a purpose including the functional hood scoop.

Am I the only one that doesn’t like this? Just because it’s well executed does not mean it works.

No interior photos? Seller fail .
Overall I dig it, but I think the factory Z headlights would’ve looked better though.

Too bad the owner/builder didn’t think far enough ahead to swap in the Miata’s softtop mechanism and/or hard mounts for the OEM hardtop. If you look carefully in the 2nd picture, then you can see the Miata’s striker plates on the interior side of the windshield frame corners.

It’s pretty nice, but I sort of wish it was a straight convertible rather than all the other work that’s been done. But at least it’s done well!
